Dermaplaning is one of those treatments that everyone has an opinion on — but not all those opinions are based in reality. As someone who performs this treatment regularly, I hear the same myths over and over.
Let's set the record straight once and for all.
Myth 1: Your Hair Will Grow Back Thicker
This is by far the most common concern I hear — and it's completely false. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair (peach fuzz) using a sterile surgical blade. The hair grows back exactly the same as before: fine, soft, and light. It doesn't change the structure of the hair follicle.
The 'thicker regrowth' myth comes from shaving, where blunt-cut hairs feel coarser. Dermaplaning is different — it's a precise exfoliation, not a shave.
Myth 2: It's Not Safe for Sensitive Skin
Actually, dermaplaning can be one of the gentlest exfoliation methods available. Unlike chemical peels or microdermabrasion, it's a physical exfoliation with no chemicals, acids, or suction involved. That said, I always assess your skin during the consultation and may recommend alternatives if you have active acne or very inflamed skin.
Myth 3: It's Painful
Not at all. Most clients describe the sensation as a gentle scraping — like a credit card being lightly dragged across the skin. Many find it relaxing. There's no downtime, no redness for most skin types, and you can wear makeup immediately after.
Myth 4: The Results Don't Last
One session gives you immediately smoother, brighter skin. The exfoliation benefits (removing dead skin cells) last around 3-4 weeks. The hair removal lasts a similar time. For best results, I recommend a session every 4-6 weeks.
Myth 5: Anyone Can Do It at Home
Please don't try this with a regular razor at home. Professional dermaplaning uses a specific surgical-grade blade at a precise 45-degree angle. The technique matters enormously — in trained hands, it's perfectly safe. DIY attempts risk nicks, irritation, and uneven results.
Dermaplaning is one of my favourite treatments to perform because the results are instant and the client reaction is always the same: 'Why didn't I do this sooner?' If you've been curious, there's never been a better time to try it.
